No 10 is Seventy Years Old
To celebrate the 70th birthday of NCB No. 10, we had a wee birthday cake - cutting ceremony on the final Steam Day at Dunaskin. Officiating, we had new member Isla Thomson cutting the cake, ably assisted by Founder Member, Jim Davidson.
No. 10 was built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co. Ltd. of Kilmarnock in 1947 as their works No. 2244. She was built for the fledging National Coal Board, and is an example of a powerful four wheeled saddle tank locomotive with cylinders of 16" bore X 24" stroke, making her eminently suitable for hauling a large train of coal waggons along the undulating lines of the upper Doon Valley, a job she was particularly proficient at.
Currently, Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group has working members on site at Dunaskin on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Anyone wishing to help out need only contact the Group :
- telephone Archie Thom, on 01292 269 260 (re Saturday Workdays)
- telephone Andy Arnot, on 01292 443 652 (re Tuesday Workdays)
or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
